ADR Regulations
European agreement concerning the international carriage of dangerous goods by road.

Andean Community of Nations (ANDEAN)
South American trade bloc involving Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, which provides free circulation of goods, capital, services and people.

Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)
Free trade area in South East Asia, currently involving 10 countries.

Bill of Exchange
A written bill requesting payment on a fixed date either directly or through a bearer.

Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM)
Area in the Caribbean which promotes economic integration and development.

Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (COGSA)
Governs ocean imports and exports.

Cash Against Documents (CAD)
Documents submitted to the exporter’s bank, forwarded to the importer’s bank, and then released to the importer as CAD.

CDG Regulations
Road and rail freight regulations concerning the carriage of dangerous goods in the UK.

CMR
The regulations that apply to every contract for carriage of goods by road.

Comite Maritime International (CMI) Rules
A non-government organisation whose aim is to unify international maritime law.

Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)
Policy to develop and strengthen farming and agriculture in the EU.

Common Market of Eastern and South/Southern Africa (COMESA)
Area in South East Africa which has established economic and social development through trade and investment.

Container Freight Station (CFS) Port facility where carriers load and unload containerised cargo.

Container Terminal / Container Yard
Depot where containers can be delivered, maintained, stored, loaded or unloaded.

Curtain-sider Trailer
Trailer fitted with PVC curtains to enable side-loading, as well as rear doors for regular loading.

Customs Handling of Import & Export Freight (CHIEF)
Electronic system which records the movement of goods by land, air and sea to enable importers and exporters to complete customs formalities online.

Customs Procedure Code (CPC)
Customs entry code given to categorise all imports / exports in the UK.

Delivered-in Charge (DIC)
Transfer charge from Container Freight Station to loading port or terminal.

Depot
Area used to pack / unpack containerised cargo.

Door/Door
Payment is made for goods to be shipped from consignor’s premises to consigner’s premises.
